Culturework’s exploration of aging this season took me back to a chapter from my family’s history when circumstances called on us to create our own rite of passage ritual. The following audio archive chronicles the momentous occasion of my sister Sarah’s third birthday from the perspectives of those intimately involved: our parents, me, and the honoree herself. I think it goes to show that growing older can feel like a solemn and weighty thing at any age, and, at the same time, life’s transitional moments carry such huge potential for joy, laughter, and togetherness.
